Orange is the New Black's Danielle Brooks was hand-picked by designer Christian Siriano to model his latest collection for Lane Bryant.
Brooks, who currently stars in The Color Purple on Broadway, looks confident and sexy as she's being styled in the colorful shoot.
Brooks told People Stylewatch that the color palette was empowering. “Being plus-size, it’s very easy to put a woman in black or navy dress,” she says, “but to get to show color on my chocolate skin is really fun for me, and it’s not an option that always comes around.”
“Fashion should never be defined by size,” Siriano said in a statement via Lane Bryant. “Regardless if it’s for red carpet or a day at the office, every woman should feel stylish and comfortable in her clothes.”
Siriano's collection will be in stores by the end of the month. It will consist of tops, dresses, and skirts from 14 to 28.
Brooks says that she loves her body, and being plus-size is not an insult.
“Right now, I’m embracing it and learning to love my size where I am, and not be ashamed of being plus-size,” she says. “What is there to be ashamed of? I’m sexy. I’m fine. It’s just a number that we’ve given it. I wear a size 14. That number, I could change it to 0, it won’t matter. I’m embracing where I am and trying to stay fit and healthy in the midst of that.”
